A recent editorial(3/3) in Newsday suggests that Riverhead should reconsider an offer by the Suffolk County Water Authority to take over the Riverhead Water District. According to Newsday Suffolk offered Riverhead $12 million. The deal would reduce the cost of upgrading Riverhead's water district and also allow Riverhead to continue to set their own water rates.

The Suffolk County Legislature has formed a committee to find a suitable site for a Shinnecock Nation gambling casino. One of the possible sites is EPCAL in Calverton. Riverhead Supervisor
Sean Walter has stated that the town has a prohibition against gambling on the site and that it is unlikely that they would repeal the prohibition. However, Walter indicated that the town board would consider any offer made for the town owned property on Route 25.

Once again the Wading River Shoreham Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Duck Pond Day. The new date is Sunday, May 23. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

J-Power a subsiduary of Tokyo based Electric Power Development Comppany acquired two 79.9 Megawatt plants in Brentwood and Shoreham from PPL. The purchase price was $125million. The output of both plants are fully contracted to the Long Island Power Authority.

The 25A Corridor Study's second community planning forum has been postponed because of the snow storm. The second forum was scheduled for the Miller Place hamlet and was supposed to
take place on 2/27. The forum will be rescheduled. The third forum for Rocky Point will take place in March and the last forum will be for the Shoreham Wading River hamlets in April.

On 2/25 Riverhead's chief financial analyst Bill Rothaar will present a detailed budget analysis of the town's financial state. It is expected that Rothaar will convey some dismal
financial projections. Supervisor Sean Walter had spoken in
January about what he called a systemic budget deficit of at least $3.5 million. It is now thought the deficit might run as
high as $6 million. If this in fact the case Walter's has indicated that the town will have to everything possible to reduce expenditures.

The Town of Riverhead has awarded a $3.5 million contract to a New Jersey company for a rail spur project at EPCAL in Calverton. The project will restore a short rail line connecting the former the Eneterprise Park at Calverton with the LI Railroad mainline. The funds for the project were provided by the American Recovery and Investment Act. It is hoped that EPCAL will become an intermodal freight terminal for Eastern Long Island.

A press conference will be held on 2/16 to announce the acquisition of the 60-acre Spring Meadow parcel in Wading River. The property which had been approved for a 51 home subdivision will be purchased by Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town. The effort to acquire the Spring Meadow parcel goes back to 1998. The county will pay 75% of the cost and Brookhaven will pay 25%. The final purchase price is $6.8 million.
The 60-acre Spring Meadow property will be the "last piece of the puzzle" and will link the holdings of state, county and town parkland. The holdings which comprise Brookhaven State Park will now include 3000 contiguous acres.
